Céad míle fáilte romhaibh uilig!

Tá súil againn go mbainfidh sibh tairbhe as an tsuíomh seo agus go mbeidh sé ina acmhainn tábhachtach dóibh siúd atá ar thóir a sinsear, nó ag lorg eolais  faoi pharóiste Cill Chartha agus faoi na daoine a bhí ina gcónaí anseo le cúpla céad bliain.

Níl anseo ach a thús. Tá súil againn eolas faoi chúltúr agus faoi oidhreacht an cheantair a chur ar fáil amach anseo chomh maith le léargas faoi ghnáth shaol na ndaoine, a gceirdeanna agus a gcaitheamh aimsire.

It is hoped the website we are pleased to introduce will provide not only an invaluable link for those wishing to research various topics such as family history over the decades but also help provide an insight into the customs, pastimes and daily life of the Kilcar area.

This site will therefore give a new perspective to its built heritage as well as providing a unique snapshot of a beautiful part of South West Donegal set against a backdrop of sea, loughs and mountains.

Cumann Staire agus Seanchais meet every Wednesday evening at 7:30pm in Áislann Chill Chartha, all welcome!

Cumann Staire agus Seachais Chill Chartha,
c/o Aislann Chill Chartha,
Kilcar,
Co. Donegal

We are a group which came together informally at the turn of the century with the sole purpose of putting together the various pieces of information on the farms and the people of the parish of Kilcar from the middle of the nineteenth century and to preserve this information for future generations.

Bearing in mind that there was nothing available on line at the time, it was a labour of love trawling through parish census records and national and county council archives. Credit for all the research must go to Kevin, Sean and Paddy and the invaluable work on the Ellis Island records by our late friend Packie, RIP

We also picked the brains of those among us who have long memories. We all regret that we didn't pay more attention to our parents and grandparents who had all this knowledge first hand.

We have over the years amassed a great deal of data and we can now trace occupation/ownership of most of the holdings in the parish. With the help of census 1901/1911 we know where the various families lived as well as the wider family connections. We are not claiming infallibility and are open to correction on all our work of course there are gaps in our notes which we would be delighted to fill. We welcome input from anyone who can help.

We meet every Wednesday night in the Áislann and we welcome anyone who cares to join us.
